This sounds almost too harsh, doesn't it. But the Teacher/Preacher who wrote this - King Solomon - found his wisdom returning after living a life of paganism, sex and rebellion. The killing he is talk about here is in the metaphorical sense. Jesus said almost the same thing when He gave the criteria to becoming a true disciple.
The Lord Jesus said "Take up your Cross and follow me".
The Cross is where death occurs, where we execute our sins and give up ourselves just as Christ did.
The Cross is that place where Healing begins.
The Cross is where we tear down the image - wrong and selfish - we have our ourselves.
The Cross is where we are then lifted up, with arms wide open in total surrender to the Lord Jesus Christ.
Solomon did not know it, but Holy Spirit used him to write those words as a metaphor, prophetic and messianic, to where we can follow the process of following God through Christ. As we meditate today and always on this passage and teach others the way, think back on the current season you are in...and then read the following passage from Psalm 40:4 to see if it lines up with where you SHOULD be, as you walk with the Lord daily...and ask "Did I nail my self confidence, pride and notion of WHO I THINK I AM to the Cross this morning...and if not, what's stopping me??!!"
Amen.
Oh, the joys of those who trust the Lord,
who have no confidence in the proud or in those who worship idols.
