EXODUS FROM THE TRUTH? ...(A REVIEW OF LATEST MOVIE ON MOSES)

The problems with modern Hollywood trying to make Bible movies to reach the majority interested in viewing Faith and Family movies are multifold. As with anything we do, we must believe in any product in order to have impact, authenticity and success.  Unlike the popular epics like the 1956 "TEN COMMANDMENTS" (Cecil B. DeMille) or even Mel Gibson's Passion of the Christ of from a decade ago, the current crop of "bandwagon-on-the-Bible-movie" producers have basically two things in mind: money and agenda, rather than narrative.

Cecil B. DeMille and Gibson's made their blockbuster (in impact and financial succcess) movies for a reason - to tell some of the stories of the Ages, that have forever impacted humanity. A lot of their actors did not necessarily believe in God or the Bible. However, they understood accuracy and appreciated the intelligence of their audiences and demographics (mainly Christians here and around the world). DeMille himself would spend 2-3 years researching, for instance, the Bible BEFORE he got the script together to begin shooting film. The result was the biggest Bible movie ever produced.

The thinking behind two massive Bible-based super-flops out of Hollywood in 2014 is the opposite of the classic film-making of DeMille and the golden age of Hollywood! The first flop one was NOAH, starring Russell Crowe (an avowed atheist). These film makers took so much liberty with the truth and the Bible which both serious Christians and Jews are familiar with, that it was offensive to just about anyone with some bible knowledge.  Now comes Ridley Scott's EXODUS - Gods and Kings". While thinking about this new movie which was released on December 12, 2014, a series on the Great Flood of Noah's era, which NBC TV did over decade ago came to mind. The fiction in this one was so out there, that Saturday Night Live did a stinging parody skit on it, later on that same week which just about sent the NBC TV series into oblivion.

It is against this background we take a look at EXODUS - Gods and Kings (2014) starring Christian Bale (as Moses) and directed by Scott, and produced by FOX.

While most of us refused to see NOAH, even on DVD due to its outrageous content, we had a little better hope for this latest version of the EXODUS from Egypt by the Israelites, led by the great Moses. Even when actor who played Moses- Christian Bale, Moses' character- and called him a sociopath and barbaric, I thought it may be worth watching to see if Hollywood learned from the mistakes of the Russell Crowe dark fictional version of Noah.  So how did they do? To wit....

THE ENTERTAINMENT:
The Real 3D version of it was technically a winner and it was the best part of the movie.   It was also the most authentic feature of the film as the viewer actually felt him/herself observing what Director Ridley Scott wanted to portray as his interpretation (A plus here).  One actually felt oneself sitting in Pharaoh Rameses’ military strategy session, or down in the quarry at Pithom or even the hair-raising chariot-around-the narrow cliff pursuit by the Egyptians of the departing millions led by Moses across the Red Sea. The visual of the formerly parted Red Sea was a powerful scene as the blue water crashed own on Rameses and of all people “Moishe” (Hebrew for Moses).

Now we know these things did not happen. It is also telling that Ridley Scott and his production team did NOT show the Red Sea actually parting (to begin with) but showed the escaping Israelites wading through knee deep water. This is typical of people who do not believe in God, the God of the Bible or the Power of God. It is my contention that they really MEANT not to show the Parting of the Red Sea, because to do that will validate the Holy One. But in order to have some semblance of truth in their Exodus from the Truth, they had to show the sea returning to its level. Even with its success here, in the special effects department, I found myself cringing at what biblical outrage they will commit next. It is obvious that the people involved in this movie intended to disrespect and dismiss the God of the Bible, they profess to be filming.

THE ERROR:

Apart from the mostly accurate Passion of the Christ and the few errors of commission (and omission) in Mark Burnett/Roma Downey THE BIBLE record-setting History Channel series in the Spring of 2013, almost anything of historical worth made by mainstream liberal Hollywood lacks in biblical Truth. Their obsession with their agendas permeates every single piece of work they seem to put out, of late.

There were so many errors in "EXODUS", that it would be pointless to list them all. Since Hollywood has no respect for the Christians and Jews to whom they allegedly aimed this movie, they forget that we know the Scriptures and so do gazillions of people from the last 4000 years plus of recorded history! Some examples: God is not a 11 or 12 year old snarling wise guy of a young boy. Pharoah did not look like a linebacker for Rutgers or the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. The rivers running red with blood had nothing to do with vicious reptiles sent by a mean 12 year old God....and on and on. It was pointless to sit around and read the credits to see who the technical advisors  were to these guys. Either they did not advise accurately on the truth of the narrative or their input was ignored.

THE EFFECT:
From word out of Hollywood, more Bible "epic" (failures?) are in the making. God alone knows what they will do to any remakes of the classic "Ben-Hur" and even a new one based on Pontius Pilate (starring Brad Pitt). While Ben-Hur was a tremendous extravaganza starring the incomparable Charlton Heston, it was still fiction. However, Pilate is well known as the man who executed the Lord Jesus on Cross, knowing He was an innocent man. The history of Pilate is available to anyone willing to do research. The Romans kept meticulous records.

This kind of historical research which the greatest movie producer - Cecil B. DeMille - is known for, is not done these days. They are others listed on the horizon, however after these two debacles, where Exodus with Christian Bale took in less than $40 million in its first two weeks, after costing $185 million to make, they will be rethinking about releasing some of these future failures. In the meantime, expect more independent Christian-based Faith and Family films to score as big as GOD's NOT DEAD, the surprise hit of 2014....bigger than Noah was in America. The after-market on God's Not Dead was both huge, as well as under the Hollywood radar as hundreds of churches bought licenses to show the movie to their congregations across America.

This is the grassroots that affect what mainstream Hollywood puts out and they know a Faith-based movie when they (we) see one. With better distribution and more mainline actors like Nicholas Cage (LEFT BEHIND); Lee Majors (Six Million Dollar Man) and the upcoming block buster in three months with Cybill Shepherd, PURE FLIX  will become established as the Christian movie company to be reckoned with. The dynamic Christiano Brothers (Rich and Dave) are also on the move with their relevant movies starring well known TV actors like Harry Anderson (Night Court) and Clarence Gilyard (Walker, Texas Ranger).

So in the final analysis, what is the effect of all of these unbiblical "Bible" epics (touted by Hollywood trade papers as the "Year of the Bible Movie")? The effect will be to make the smaller, more intentionally 100% Christian movie producers more established in the huge Heartland Market, where the little white wooden church on the corner still sits and where Aunt Bessie and Uncle Leroy got married and own the same King James Bible for the last 60 years. Hollywood can't make this one up.

Here is the upcoming movie from PURE FLIX, which is the follow-up to God's Not Dead, and is called "DO YOU BELIEVE":

RAY COMFORT'S NOAH, THE MOVIE....& SEA SAND DISCOVERED IN MIDDLE OF MOUNTAINS OF NORTHERN ILLINOIS

Popular (and sometimes controversial) Evangelist Ray Comfort has done it again! Hot on the heels of his life-changing (and popular to millions of viewers) Pro-life movie "180" and the even more controversial "Evolution vs God", Ray and his Living Waters ministry has gotten out in front of the upcoming multi-million dollar Paramount "Biblical Epic" Noah movie- NOAH AND THE LAST DAYS.

Using his now trademark modus operandi of releasing fast moving and unique docu-interview movies which are released FREE and directly to YouTube with videos financed by supporters as evangelism tools, Ray Comfort has not only filled in the glaring gaping holes left open by the Russell Crowe NOAH movie, but given the TRUE lesson of the Flood.

After viewing the just released movie (soon to be out free on YouTube), it is clear that Ray has now become the True Voice of One Crying in America. The prophetic proclamations are evident as these modern days are even more corrupt and evil than those in the Days of Noah.  There is absolutely no difference between the depraved state of mankind from over 2500 years ago as recorded in Genesis 6, and the perversion predicted in Romans 1:18-32 (click here to read).

Genesis 6:5-8 carries the basis of the LORD destroying the earth with the Flood  Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And the Lord was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart. So the Lord said, “I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth, both man and beast, creeping thing and birds of the air, for I am sorry that I have made them.” But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord.

We are living in days where it is so horrible that everyone does what is right in his/her own eyes. Ray Comfort has listed 10 signs which every believer should be on the alert for, in such days as we have now, to avoid sin and reach the lost. This is basically the message which the massively expensive Hollywood version of Noah misses. These ten signs are:
  1. Love of money (2 Pet 2:1-3)
  2. Wars, earthquakes, famines (Matt 24:7)
  3. Moon will turn blood red (Acts 2:20)
  4. Blaspheming God's name will be common place (2 Tim 3:1-2)
  5. Increase of acceptance of homosexuality (Lk 17:28-30)
  6. Religious hypocrisy will be prevalent (2 Tim 3:5)
  7. People will deny God as Creator (2 Pet 3:35-6)
  8. Fear of the future (Lk 21:26)
  9. Scoffers will mock the end times saying warnings have always been, but nothing's happened (2 Pet 3:3-4)
  10. People won't take the end times prophecies seriously (Matt 24:37-39)**
Everyone of these ten prophetic proceeds unashamedly in 21st Century America, where even people inside the church are committing some of these same atrocities against the Holiness of God. Each of the ten Biblical prophesies stand on their own and came alive when Ray interviewed (on camera) ordinary Americans. These people exhibit such a lack of biblical influence, knowledge and discernment, that they are living examples of each of those ten points/bible-based prophesies of these last days.

While the interviews are bad enough, the most stunning segment of Comfort's NOAH THE
MOVIE, was the interview with Professor of Geology and Oceanography, Rich Behl of California State University-Long Beach. Professor Behl argument against the Flood was so disjointed, wrong and just plain stupid that it will leave you scratching your head when you see it! He is the living example of the the Lord s word that says in 1 Corinthians 1:27 "God has chosen the foolish things of the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to shame the things which are strong."

A couple of years ago, during a visit to Starved Rock State Park in Northern Illinois, something caught my eyes in a ravine about 100 plus feet ABOVE sea level that threw me, a man who has seen a fair share of different types of beaches. There was SEA SAND everywhere in certain parts of Starved Rock! It was clean, perfect, down to the nitty gritty sea sand. It was high up in a  ravine halfway up the mountain. It was down at the bottom of deep gorges, which had layers that genuine HONEST scientists and geologists would see was carved completely out by a flood. I spoke to two local man, who said that years ago, the local native Americans told of a BIG FLOOD which caused a shift in a lot of things on Starved Rock!! (SEE PHOTOS ATTACHED HERE)

It was almost as if...and it was indeed, the Lord confirming to a man who is not a scientist
or a seminary trained preacher, that He had been there and His flood took the sands off a regular beach and dumped it in mountains and gorges in the middle of a landlocked state of a huge continent! Only my God, the God in Whom I put my trust and Faith, can do this sign and wonder! Doubters and unbelievers abound in these last days, but God has chosen the foolish things of this world to confound the wise. This stunning discovery in Starved Rock by a nobody like me and Ray Comfort's love for the Truth with Noah the Movie are but two small examples of the depth and width and scope of the Love of Almighty God, the Creator of the Heavens and the earth.

#SON OF GOD SET TO GO BIG....WHAT ABOUT NOAH?

Two brand new movie are due to hit the screens in the next two weeks. One is based on the Bible, the other one is Noah. The most important release is called "SON OF GOD", the Mark Burnett-Roma Downey movie, reflective of the phenomenal 2013 History Channel Series "The Bible". While that series "The Bible", contained some contextual errors, it reached a new generation which most of those criticizing the series will never reach.

Whenever the Word of God goes out into the atmosphere, great things happen - including spiritual warfare. A clash of systems is about to hit this planet when those two movies go public. Son of God tells the powerful story of Jesus Christ, the Son of God Who became Man, so He could identify with His Creation - thus willingly give His Life that He may SAVE those who repent and believe.
Son of God is produced by two solid Christian believers - Burnett and Downey (husband and wife) - who believe the Gospel as preached in Mark 1:15. Jesus sent John the Baptist ahead with the message of Repentance.......then in His first message of the Gospel of the Kingdom, He said plain "REPENT, BELIEVE the Gospel and BE SAVED". That is the order. Through this beautifully woven story of Love and Compassion that message comes through along with the word "RESCUE". Jesus basically came to rescue humanity with a free offer of Faith and Salvation. All we have to do is believe.

Word of mouth will carry this movie to "Passion of the Christ" status - off the charts. After watching the entire Burnett-Downey "The Bible" series and following the worldwide reaction on Twitter especially....and combining that with the most popular smartphone/tablet app in the world YOUVERSION, interest in the timeless Word of God is now at a peak! This movie will take this interest to a new level. What makes this movie authentic is the humility of its producers, who surrounded themselves with prayer warriors and pastors looking to tell the true story.
What makes Noah, the next release, almost the Hollywood Dark Knight version of the The Flood, just plain wrong is the same thing on the other side. Son of God was done by Christians to tell the true story of Christ. Paramount seemed to have had good intentions to tell the amazing story of the Flood that wiped out rampant evil from the Earth, but Noah's Oscar-nominated director Darren Aronofsky had other ideas. First of all, you don't win an Oscar in today's Hollywood by being fair and balanced to Christians and the Bible. We just saw what happened last month when the Oscars pulled the nomination of the only Christian-based song, for song of the year, because the nominee was doing what every other nominee does - campaign to make the song known!

Secondly Aronofsky's mission seems to be modern American low-rent lies and political correctness. It is not accident this movie looks like one of those Batman Dark Knight episodes, starring a man who hates God - Russell Crowe, who does NOT look 500 plus years old. We know that God had promised that He would not destroy the earth until the great Methuselah died. In fact the name Methuselah means "his death shall bring Judgment"! This Hollywood "dark knight" version is more about the leftist's favorite religious cult of "environmentalism and overpopulation"....or "climate change and abortion"! What in the world does this have to do with the account that begins in Genesis 6??!!
Modern pagan American subjects like Climate Change and "overpopulation" are absolutely 180 degrees out of phase with the Biblical account of Noah.  Hollywood and their morally and intellectually vacant amen corner in the mainstream media, see nothing wrong with that they do and did (so far) in this movie. They think we Bible-believing Christians should just be grateful for the occasional bone and go out in droves to see their "masterpieces". What they don't seem to fully realize we take EVERY word of the Book SERIOUSLY! Every word was put there by the Lord for a reason.

There are more Bible based movies to come apart from these two, in coming months. The next major one is EXODUS (the story of Moses) starring Christian Bale and another called Mary, Mother of God with Ben Kingsley. We shall see how these pan out. In the Christian world, movies rise or fall on word of mouth.  When Noah (and others come out, we shall see what the "word on the street is"). I plan to see both, to be both fair and authentic, as far as any criticism of Noah. Paramount is nervous about any backlash and may be correcting course on this as we speak. So all of this public discourse on the Noah Movie pre-pub could result in a better movie. Let's hope....

SEVEN THINGS GOD HATES - #4: A DEVIOUS HEART

This entire concept (of a "devious heart") goes completely against every western concept that we are really "good people". You would never hear about the "fallen nature" of man, or corruption of the human race; or even the word "sin". Nobody, in these days of extreme political correctness would even think they (you and I) were born with a devious heart.
Proverbs 6:16-19 New King James Version (NKJV)
These six things the Lord hates,
Yes, seven are an abomination to Him:
    A proud look,
A lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood,
A heart that devises wicked plans,
Feet that are swift in running to evil,
A false witness who speaks lies,
And one who sows discord among brethren.
Yet, the Creator Who made us, recognizes every single one of us as not just capable of unimaginable evil, but possessing a bent towards it. Jesus Christ, God Who became Man said as much in Mark 7:21 "For it is from within, out of a person's heart, that evil thoughts come--sexual immorality, theft, murder,"  This is the outflow of the Adamic or sinful nature which each human is born with.

Mark is the first book of the New Testament ever written and it was dictated to him by the Apostle Peter himself - an eyewitness if there ever was one. Peter is an interesting study of a man who was sold out to Jesus, the Disciple of Disciples and all that. Yet, the same man who cut off Malchus' ear trying to defend Jesus from the Temple Guard was denying Jesus three times, outside that same temple as the religious leaders captured Him for their kangaroo court.

Jesus also spoke of the evil of the heart further in Matthew 13:15 and just about described every human being ever born, before the Spirit and Power of God delivered you and I from spiritual wickedness and eternal death! The Messiah said "For this people's heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them.'"

This is never more evident when you watch the filth and degradation coming out of American culture today. Take one look at any American TV award show to see the depths of depravity of western "humanity". The recently concluded 2014 Grammy Awards is Exhibit A. We saw everything God described in Ezekiel 16:48-50 as to WHY He destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah. Read on:
"As I live," declares the Lord GOD, "Sodom, your sister and her daughters have not done as you and your daughters have done. Behold, this was the guilt of your sister Sodom: she and her daughters had arrogance, abundant food and careless ease, but she did not help the poor and needy. Thus they were haughty and committed abominations before Me. Therefore I removed them when I saw it.…

America is modern day Sodom where its wealth, prosperity and power led to such easy living since World War II that we have gone slack in morality and cold in heart towards the Lord. The bad news is that God never changes and He has seen this before....thousands of years now. Man, in the wickedness and lust of everything ungodly, make the same mistakes over and over and over ahead. While these mistakes take several forms, which we can talk about for volumes, the underlying issue is Sin. While we are not allowed to talk about it in modern culture and even most modern churches, that too has never gone off the Lord's Radar....and He will punish it!

To help us avoid this trap of an evil and devious heart, which rebels against God, let us see briefly the sequence of events of Sin and how we can avoid it.
    1. The world, the flesh and Satan throws temptation in our faces blatantly or subtly which triggers a thought and desire for that thing or person.
    2.  Depending on the current condition of your walk with Jesus and where one is in the process of Sanctification, that thought or desire will trigger two things - either you will seek to gratify your own flesh no matter the cost OR you will be so disgusted that everything the Lord taught you will kick in and you will RUN away immediately (like Joseph and Potiphar's wife).
    3.  If you choose the Biblical "RUN" option, you and I are in the clear. But here is what happens if you do NOT consider the cost of fulfilling that temporary lust of the flesh and discipline yourself - your heart will lie to you! YES! Your pride (sin #1 here) will like (sin#2)  and tell you that you "really deserve this. God is keeping him or her from you....or that new Mustang (which will put you $40,000 further in debt)....you deserve this....you work hard", And how about this one "you won't get caught"!!! DOES ANY OF THIS SOUND FAMILIAR?! THIS IS SATAN TEMPTING EVE IN THE GARDEN IN GENESIS 3!!
    4.  Failure to run and instead listen to Satan and the flesh and your own wicked heart will result in death. If not immediate physical death, then death of purity...death of a clear conscience...death of a vibrant relationship with your spouse or the bank or worse - GOD!

This is where a prideful wickedly devious heart can lead a person. While God's grace extends to the Christian who sins and fall like this, there is a loss of eternal reward and the spiritual blessings in the eternal kingdom to come. This is the end result of the devious heart. This will work out in the end for the person who has been truly saved, but we should worry about those who walk in constant wickedness, such as we see on full display - not just out of Hollywood, but in our local schools; state capitols and all the way to the top of business and politics.

The only cure to make a heart right is to cry out to God, through Jesus Christ for Him to "open the eyes of your heart"! Great title for a song, as well as good theology like this will focus us on what is truly important - Salvation and getting your own heart, and mine, right with God. While Repentance may be a bad word today, it is still the only road to righteousness - from a Devious Heart!

(MANY ASK: WHAT IS THE DEFINITION OF THE SPIRITUAL HEART?
ANSWER: Sue Bohlin of Probe Ministries has a great and concise definition for us here - In the Bible, the heart is shown to have three capacities: to think (or believe), to choose, and to feel. The heart is really the "innermost part" of us to which David refers in Ps. 51)

    MOVIE REVIEW: TIMECHANGER

    AN INDICTMENT OF MODERN CHRISTIANITY?
In 2002, Christian movie producer Rich Christiano released his first full-length movie TIMECHANGER which starred a number of well known Hollywood actors – Gavin McLeod (Loveboat); Hal Linden (Barney Miller); Richard Riehle (West Wing); Jennifer O’Neill (Summer of ’42); Comedian Paul Rodriguez and more. With a budget of less than $1M, TimeChanger told a story of Professor Russell Carlisle (D. David Morin) and one missing phrase from his book manuscript. In the plot, Professor Carlisle works at Grace Bible Seminary in the year 1890. He is seeking the unanimous approval of the Seminary trustees to publish his book….that is, until Dr. Norris Anderson (MacLeod) objects over the omission of the Name of Jesus Christ.  Civilized arguments ensues as Dr. Carlisle defends what he sees as the harmless teaching of “good moral values” for life, but which Dr. Anderson sees as worthless without mention who gave these moral laws for living – Jesus Christ.

To prove his point to an obstinate Dr. Carlisle, Dr Anderson invites him to the latter’s home to see something which will prove the latter’s reluctance to approve a book which he knows will add to the decline of Christianity in the future, is correct. Apparently, Dr. Anderson’s father had developed a time travel machine, which was now perfected. He then persuades Dr. Carlisle to allow himself to be sent 100 years into the 21st Century for the experience of a lifetime! What Dr. Carlisle observes is the current corrupt state of the American church; Christianity and society in general.

From a time (1890) when an outrageous 5% of marriages ended in divorce, he is told that now over 50% of marriages today end in divorce. He sees Christians partaking in cultural rut gut as they sit silent at movies where God is blasphemed! Just as horrible, is the current state of the church. The professor sees program after program or one activity after another there, yet the full counsel of God is not preached or taught or walked out. Dr. Carlisle sees the lack of enthusiasm and passion for lost souls in a modern mega church and it shocks him.

What is shocking about this 2002 movie which we showed to the community at the end of February,  is how much ahead of its time that TimeChanger really is, in 2013!  I did mention this to its producer Rich Christiano, who has gone on to make several powerfully sound Biblical modern dvd favorites (Secrets of Jonathan Sperry; Amazing Love etc) whose work can be found on his Christian Movies website. (Christiano has managed to get a lot of mainstream Hollywood actors/actresses to be in his movies, which have increased their appeal.)  As you watch this film, you cannot help but find yourself looking into a mirror to see how much of yourself is being portrayed on the screen – at that time! The script is prophetic and very well written by Christiano.

Initially, the viewer may have some trouble picking up why a group of senior looking men are refusing to agree to publish a book by the younger professor, who then tries to do an unchristian thing and go around the endorsement panel. However once the confused Dr. Carlisle is transported 100 years into the future, an unsettling (and at times, amusing) adventure begins. One scene should make all Christians cringe. There is a scene where Dr. Carlisle has bought a hotdog, sat down to pray for his food, closes his eyes to pray only to have a little girl steal his food and run off with it. When she is finally caught and told that it is wrong to steal, her immediate response is “SAYS WHO?” This eye opening comment makes Dr. Carlisle finally realize that apart from teaching WHO said all of those commandments and statues were wrong, morality is relative! In fact, the movie demonstrates just how Satan has deceived the world. He will even allow his conqueror Jesus to be called a “moral” teacher rather than the Lawgiver of Heaven and the Savior of the World.

What this movie shows is the folly of the modern church – almost every church and/or ministry – in focusing on the people running it, in focusing on secular pursuits dressed up in a bible, in focusing on activity rather than checking on their people being saved  and more. The photography; editing and writing are up to par for any movie made in the early part of the 21st century.  TimeChanger is really important for anyone who cares about how far down the gutter America and its culture have fallen. We will be convicted – each of us – for going along with the culture; watching its blasphemy and perversion and for thinking it has no effect on the soul of a nation. The stunning final message by Dr. Carlisle to a hushed church is the most uncomfortable part of TimeChanger for any true believer. A true and faithful believer would immediately recognize that this is the accusation Jesus Himself will have against the church, its leadership and some of His so-called followers on Judgment Day.

TimeChanger is recommended for those who are searching for the Truth and how to get back into alignment. It is very well written and the humor of Paul Rodriguez and others make for an easy night out with the family and some popcorn. This is also recommended as for those who are faithful to the Lord and are looking for His Second Coming.

TIMECHANGER is recommended as the movie for such a time as this!

    MOVIE REVIEW: BEN-HUR

    BEN-HUR (1959) Winner of 11 Academy Awards
CURRENT REMAKE IN THE WORKS AT MGM!
Before anyone think it is strange that I would be reviewing a movie that has been around for almost 54 years, check this! MGM, the makers of this version of BEN HUR is in the process of raising the capital for a massive remake of the Lew Wallace book, which spurred this classic epic into existence! This monthly movie review feature aims for cutting edge commentary which never conforms to current cultural configurations. Therefore, for this wonderful month, we look at an action packed thriller set around the time of Jesus Christ: BEN-HUR!

Union Civil War General Lew Wallace wrote and released Ben Hur: A Tale of the Christ in 1880 and it is still called the most influential book of the 19th century.  Including 1959, there have been four movies made on this book and the upcoming MGM remake will be number 5! Wallace's story revolves around Judah Ben-Hur, a wealthy Jewish nobleman (played by Charlton Heston) in the Jerusalem of AD 26. Judah was childhood friends with the Roman Messala (Stephen Boyd) who has now Roman military elite! Rome had conquered Judea at this time and ruled Jerusalem with an iron fist causing conflict between these two long time friends. Due to some evil shenanigans by Messala against his long time, now ex-friend, Ben-Hur is taken prisoner by Rome and sentenced to the Roman ships as a galley slave.

On the way to the ships, Ben-Hur and a group of slaves stop in a town called Nazareth, dying of thirst. Local natives start giving the slave gang water out of gourds, but the brutal Roman guard are under orders not to give any water to the parched Ben-Hur....that is, until a local Carpenter shows up! This is AD 26 and the Carpenter, Whose face is never seen, stands His ground in giving water to Ben-Hur, even when the Roman prison guard threatens Him! The look on the Roman guard when the Carpenter turns around and looks at the guard, while giving Ben-Hur more water is priceless. The audience knows by now that the Carpenter is Jesus. It is a great object lesson of evil shrinking away under the Powerful Stare of the Creator!
The long narrative sees our hero, Ben-Hur, still full of hate against Rome,  going through many personal trials and then victories when he is adopted by Arias the Roman consul (Jack Hawkins) after Ben-Hur prevents him from committing suicide. Life takes an amazing turn for him now as he returns to Jerusalem, having been a champion chariot racer, in his new station in life. The greatest chariot racing of any kind, in Hollywood movie history, then takes places in this Wilder's 1959 version of Ben Hur! It is 15 minutes long and breathtaking.

Apart from this excitement, the story really turns on Ben-Hur's new wife, Esther, who hears a man named Jesus Christ preaching "The Sermon on the Mount"! Hoping to cure her husband of his long time hatred of the Romans, Esther takes him to listen to the Messiah preach of love and forgiveness. He could hear but not see the speaker close up. After hearing Jesus, Ben-Hur rejects his favored adopted status as a great Roman charioteer and returns to his Jewish roots. He tried to take others to see Jesus, but the Christ's trial before Pontius Pilate is already going on and Ben-Hur is too late! As the Romans parade a badly beaten Jesus through the streets on the way to crucify Him, Ben-Hur finally recognizes Jesus as the Man Who gave him some water in Nazareth seven years before! He tries to return the favor to Jesus, but this time, the Roman guard has his way, and knocks the water away.

This is a beautiful movie of forgiveness and made for family viewing on the many cold long winter's nights as we have been having! Ben-Hur's famous line "I felt His Voice take the sword out of my hand" is a classic in redemption stories. The quality of Ben Hur was high definition, before HD was cool! It was restored and remmastered to be released for its 50th Anniversary in 2009, frame by gazillions of frames in this 222 minute long film! If you get the Blue Ray version or even the regular DVD or stream it live from Netflix or Amazon.com Prime, you won't be disappointed in this widescreen delight. The music score is classic as you would expect from a William Wilder movie and scored by the famed Hungarian composer Miklos Rozsa. Miklos is famous for other Academy winners like Spellbound (1945) and A Double Life (1947).

Be on the lookout for the sixth and amazingly technology to be introduced into the coming MGM remake of Ben-Hur! The script has already been written by Keith Clarke and will have a more focused protrayal of the adult life of Jesus, including the Crucifixion. Keith Clarke wrote the remarkably intense movie "The Way Back" and this new remake of Ben-Hur marks another in the sudden turn to religious epics in Hollywood! The History Channels' upcoming 10-part series called THE BIBLE, produced by Roma Downey (Touched by an Angel); Pontius Pilate (Warner Brothers): Moses (Spielberg) and the upcoming Noah, starring Russell Crowe, are surprising in this secular age when  Christians are under persecution everywhere!
