OH FATHER WHERE ART THOU? ....MORE THAN A BUMPER STICKER (JEREMIAH 29:11)

For the past two articles posted, we have looked at the problem of young men going off the rails, through the Eyes of the Lord.  We have actual proof of why all the problems with young men and boys in crisis for the past two decades began when the state replaced God as the father in many homes. Just look at the condition of almost every single American city. We have proof that what the Lord warned about in His Word is so true, it is difficult to look at without shedding a tear.

It did not have to be so. This was, is and never will be God’s plan for the half of the nuclear family, which He created. Men, who would father sons, were given a charge by God, since the beginning of time. This duty to raise up Godly children, as ordained in the Scriptures, has  NEVER EVER changed. Never. (See video below for God’s instructions to parents).

The problems beyond fathers in the shrinking percentage of two-parent homes is their absence, now for the majority of children. When you add the intentional mocking of masculinity and Godly manhood by the secular culture, it is little wonder that men walk away or pull into a defensive or passive mode. Even so-called solid evangelical churches and especially influential megachurches shortchange or give scant attention to men’s ministry – the same men they say they want to be better fathers, husbands and community leaders. In fact, sometimes you get the impression that all these big churches care about is numbers and the big checks the shrinking amount of men going to church can write.

This is not how God planned it. When God created Adam, He gave Adam dominion over the earth and work to do. It was Adam who came up with the following names: rhinoceros, hippopotamus, and possum. One day, in Heaven, we should ask him about that…lol…but I digress.  God created men to represent Him on earth. Even though Adam blew it sky high when he listened to his wife, who had just talked to a serpent, the mission never changed. God has a plan.

He said so very plainly in Jeremiah 29:11-13. While the original text was dedicated to the Land of Israel, all Scripture was written to all peoples of all time.  So the words of the Bible are for all people of all time.

However, this final post of the 3 part “Oh Father Where art Thou” Series, is not just about diagnosing the serious problem of losing our sons to liberal pit. We are about solutions….and only the Lord knows and HAS this solution. He has told all mankind ALL through the Bible about His love, forgiveness, compassion and abundant life – in this life and the next. Lack of belief in His promises are not His fault but the fault of all who are disgruntled, depressed and in despair. Still, the promises are the same and are open for the taking, until the end of time.

Here is Jeremiah 29:11 - "For I know the plans that I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope".

We glean, from this, a factual and promissory statement from God:
  • He (God) has plans for us (verse 11). Those of us who have encountered the Living Christ know He has called us to a purpose for living. He is the only Being in the universe who can provide not just the goal for a meaningful, abundant life, but the means to get there. God’s plans literally work in mysterious ways. He obviously cannot show us everything He has designed for us at once, or we would not believe, fail miserably and then give up. God’s plans unfold as we walk closely with Him and seek Him daily and learn more about Him, from reading His Word. His plans give Hope, Purpose, Direction, Inspiration and more. But the majority of our young people who are not just lost but are now called “NONES” because they want nothing to do with Faith or the simple Gospel of Christ. No one ever tells them about God’s Plans for their lives – THE RIGHT WAY.  The lost generations become lost because adults did not care enough to go beyond teaching them in platitudes and empty words.
  • God’s Plans (still verse 11), if taught accurately as the Scriptures exhort in Deuteronomy 6:6-9, also reveals the following:
  • 1.  He cares about our welfare deeply. His children never go hungry. I am here to say He always provides, even if is a plain saltine cracker. But His concern for our welfare goes beyond food, health, and shelter. He cares more about our souls and growth in the Knowledge of Him than if we see the latest super-hero movie or have the latest iPhone. Can someone please try to get to the nearest teenager/millennial to you so they can see beyond materialism and narcissism?
  • 2. God is not here to hurt you, but there is pain in life. It is called life. Jesus explicitly stated that in this world, we will have trouble, but “behold He has overcome the world”. It is all about perspective. Worldly perspective leads to what we see daily in society, schools, culture and even churches and family. Godly perspective leads to the proper outlook on dealing with the peaks and valleys of daily living in a fallen world. If no one tells the young about original Sin and Satan, they will remain deceived until Judgment Day. By then, it will be too late and God will hold every single adult responsible!
  • Provision and perspective give us Hope in the One Who provides both to us. Anyone who has been gloriously converted into the Kingdom of His marvelous Light; instinctively knows He Who gives us Hope. It is the absolute essence of Faith, which is in such short supply, in these last days.  Lack of Faith in the God Who has the blueprints for the best life one can ever imagine, if we work/reason/believe in Him, does not change the concept of Faith. Calling the sky purple and yellow does not make it so. God is God and all His Words are consistent and true.

12 Then you will call upon Me and come and pray to Me, and I will listen to you

  • Herein lies a major failure by adults – from church and community leaders to parents. God DOES have all these amazing plans or blueprints for the lives of each human being born.  However, the majority of this world has kept the next generations from accessing the Truth of these plans. The blueprints are there, BUT THEY MUST BE ACCESSED! There is a way, which the Lord lays out for us, to both access and maximize the potential of these “plans”.  If we wanted a raise from our bosses or wanted to try out for "Band" in high school, don’t we go and talk to the boss, coach or bandleader? Don’t we communicate with a person who we consider influential in helping our situation? Of course, we do! So why are everyone with influence in the Christian world (family, friends, preachers etc.) NOT teaching the next generation about talking with and to God? It is called a relationship for a reason – relationships have two-way communication. This relationship can only be maintained through PRAYER! We all know the answer. The reason most Christians and that includes pastors CANNOT teach on prayer is because they do not pray themselves. Surveys have found that the average pastor in the west prays only 10 minutes a week....outside of saying "thanks for the food"! This is outrageous. The very fact the All-Powerful Creator of Everything says (and means it) that we can call on Him anytime and He will hear us, should boggle the mind with awe, fear, and respect….all of which are unknown even to a lot of Christians!  God says “pray to me and I will listen”. He is right! He not only hears, but He pays attention. There is so much fun made of “thoughts and prayers” these days that the lost generations that the young and Millennials see no value whatsoever in praying to (or talking with), our Heavenly Father. This is outrageous.

13 You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart.

  • So we know, (those of us with experience) that God has plans laid out for us. He is a good, good Father and wants us to talk to Him about it. He is NOT an ATM machine Who owes anybody anything. In fact, if God were to give us what we deserve, they would be no hope for all mankind.  Somehow, in this rich entitlement culture, a wealthy, spoiled population of the lost generations expect all good things from both their parents and God to fall into their hands….and to keep being given to them. There is no concept of a personal relationship with Jesus Christ which requires us to be “ALL IN”. This is what God means by “search for me with all your heart” (verse 13b).  This relationship, like any interpersonal one, requires commitment and work.  This can only be taught through Discipleship, of which there is an awful lack, in these final days of the Age of Grace. The question is this: do we adults and the current crop of men especially - fathers and grandfathers, have enough HEART for our Heavenly Father, that we will try to help save the next generation of young men before it is too late? The little we can do, those who are not in men's ministry like my friends and me, is a lot more than the entire world is doing. Think about it. Act on it. Leave a Godly Legacy.

PARENTS ARE ACCOUNTABLE TO GOD FOR THEIR STEWARDSHIP

Miley Cyrus from the Disney days, with her father
Nothing could be more obvious in today's corrupt celebrity culture than this fact. We see more and more unspeakable crimes committed by young people everywhere. The corruption spread a long time ago to what was once the wholesome Disney television network. You can't even let your children watch Nickelodeon anymore. TV Land used to show the old TV classics like the Andy Griffith show and Leave it to Beaver. The ABC Family channel has nothing worthwhile or family friendly except for the 700 Club from the Christian Broadcasting Network.  The most recent outrage, in the long line of outrages by former child actors and actresses, was committed by Miley Cyrus. She is the daughter of achy-breaky singer Billy Ray, who is still to correct his daughter's misbehavior, and thus, allow her to become more outrageous in the future.

But is this what God has in mind for us parents? The biggest job any parent can have is to minister, raise up and disciple our children in the Ways of the Lord, the Scriptures and accepting Jesus as Lord and Savior. We are not supposed to be their enabler by giving them no boundaries. Modern parents, who were led astray by Dr Spock and modern liberalism, have fallen flat on their face and are in real danger of Judgment of Holy God, if they do not wake up and get right themselves.

God gave clear instructions for parents on how to raise our children. I explore these in today's message here on the PLUMBLINE TV show, as it is timely for what American parents are facing. Our pre-teens and even toddlers are bombarded by unsaved network TV executives whose only morality is the fat bank account! Please read the following passage and then watch the exposition of it, in the video teaching below:

Deuteronomy 6

New American Standard Bible (NASB)

“Now this is the commandment, the statutes and the judgments which the Lord your God has commanded me to teach you, that you might do them in the land where you are going over to possess it, so that you and your son and your grandson might fear the Lord your God, to keep all His statutes and His commandments which I command you, all the days of your life, and that your days may be prolonged. O Israel, you should listen and [a]be careful to do it, that it may be well with you and that you may multiply greatly, just as the Lord, the God of your fathers, has promised you,in a land flowing with milk and honey.

Hear, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord is one! You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand and they shall be as[b]frontals [c]on your forehead. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

CAN UNBELIEVING PARENTS TEACH ABOUT JESUS?

PART 2 - THE ANSWERS
The very thought provoking column by William Hageman of the Chicago Tribune which sparked these last two blog posts also tried to offer some solutions to this increasing crisis of Faith. (The column is headlined "TEACHING KIDS ABOUT FAITH WHEN YOU DON'T PRACTICE ONE").  Some of them are worth implementing immediately.

Hageman threw in some ideas from authors whose books have sold well in Christian circles (like Sticky Faith).  He said that the topic of God is going to come up in the daily lives - mostly at school - of these kids who are not raised in households of faith. I would add, that God has His people, no matter how young or old, EVERYWHERE. Even in some crime-ridden public school in the worst-in-the-nation system in Chicago, we are finding out from my Gideon Bible brethren that sometimes the principal or an administration person may actually be a real Christian.....and as happened in a school in Springfield yesterday in a bad neighborhood, they actually want the Gideon New Testaments handed out in their schools. We are finding this a lot, on an anecdotal level, in school districts across the country as more and more responsible adults realize that sinful mortal men and women do not have the true answers to give these poor kids any real hope!

To build on Hageman's point, if a parent has no faith or practices none BUT is concerned about their children's future, when the child brings up the fact that he or she saw a bunch of Christians holding hands around a flagpole in the school yard wanted to join them - then please do not make fun of that child for wanting to know more about, for example, SEE YOU AT THE POLE! This year's event is on Wednesday September 26.  We will remind folks of this in a couple weeks, but be ye prepared for that big day in the life of a school child as the academic year gears into full speed! Even if the parent could care less about God or church or the Bible or prayer (except when something bad happens) etc etc....if you try to stop a young person who is seeking answers which you, in your evil rebellion against God cannot or do not want to give - you will be judged harshly by God, if you do not repent and make it right, period. This is a promise from Jesus "And whosoever shall offend one of these little ones that believe in me, it is better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he were cast into the sea" (Mark 9:42).

So we know kids are going to find out about God somewhere - either how to disobey Him more, or hopefully, through peers - seek to know why Susie or Joshua or Brittany have such a wonderful shine on their face and smile, even through adversity and even bullying in school. The least an unbelieving parent can do, is NOT get in their way. If there is an athletic program in the school, there will most likely be a Fellowship of Christian Athletes huddle (Bible Study group) in there. I would encourage the kid to join one of those groups - even if the child is not a full time jock or a swimmer or just plays chess. They will not refuse him or her entry to the group. Huddle leaders are students just like them, except the huddle leader is usually a born again older teen who is grounded in the Bible. It has to be the Bible and nothing else.  The article mentioned above got input from people from other faiths and NO faith. While it may be worth looking into their methods whereby they share their world-based philosophy, you may use some of them but base it 100% on God's Word!

If an unchurched or unsaved parent wants the best for their kids' life, they would allow them to seek purpose in their lives on their own, if they are not willing to do it the right way. The right way is what God says. God gave the example in the Book of Deuteronomy to show how we are supposed to teach our kids His Word. "You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates. (Deuteronomy 6:5-9 ESV)

Most western parents, and increasingly, most Christian parents do not even follow 15% of that recommendation from Abba Father! They will drop their kids off at youth group and never check to see what they are learning while they themselves talk about Golf, football and Starbucks in church with their adult friends. This is no different from what an unsaved parent does....except it looks better because the parent goes to a (mostly country-club) American church.

So think on these things, my friends. Are there answers to these things which are occurring with frequency? Yes...and none of them are easy. In fact, some of them will seem impossible. An increasing number of churches are abandoning their jobs and missions to reach these folks "because it is too hard....and we have to take care of our own"!!! This is disobedience and these pastors and church boards will be accountable for that...do not go to these people. Find someone you trust, a co-worker who is fired up for Jesus or an obvious active Christian and seek their counsel. Most times, nine of out ten, this type of person will go out their way to help!! Therefore, Open the Eyes of your Heart my friends, see the need, and act accordingly.

WHY NOT FAMILY DAY IN AMERICA?!

February is not only the shortest and fastest moving month of each year (with Valentine's Day and all) but a time to remember a lot of historical events. Nothing is becoming history faster than the traditional North American Family! The typical nuclear family of mom, dad and two or three kids with the suburban home and a privacy fence is slipping fast into the minority.

This is by no means, a criticism of single moms and their kids or those wonderful grandparents who are now raising their own grandchildren! In fact, I know of a great-grandmother in her energetic 80's who is now raising a great-grandchild! These folks are saints! What this tells me is the men who caused these children to happen failed them by either leaving or not being there, for whatever reason. If anything, this is a HUGE criticism of men - from a fellow man! I know of what I speaking, being a men's ministry leader since 1997....(by the way, in all of Christianity, men's ministry is the most difficult to execute for Jesus! I can explain some other time)!

What we are seeing though is family re-defined, by mandate, from politicians and judges, who are infringing on our Faith beliefs. These people tell us we have to accept two members of the same sex as they redefine them as a family. What God and His creation tells me is two men or two women in an unnatural relationship are not the same as a mom and dad! Whether these authorities or those in same-sex relationships know it or not, they are under the Law of God against adultery, false gods and if they are granted adoption rights - are in violation of the Commandment of parenting! For instance, how can a child honor "thy father and mother", when society tells that child that he has two dads or two moms?! This alone brings a separate judgment from Christ, Who said that if anyone causes the least of these (young ones) to stumble, it would be better if they had an appointment with a millstone necklace!!! (Read Matthew 18:6

It is hard enough being a regular parent balancing work, bills, obligations, routine home and auto maintenance while raising toddlers and/or teenagers, without outside forces telling us how we should live, eat, drive, pray etc etc... The question is, "Who do these people think they are anyway?!!!"  The other question is "What business is it of some busy body on the local or national news, or some corrupt politician or media person, anyway?" Just recently, we had the United States government telling churches and their supporting organizations they must provide contraception and RU486 abortive pills free of charge to employees! Now, even our churches are not safe from this sort of thing!

Yes, we deserve a break today! We have Mother's Day coming up....then Father's Day.... Independence, Labor, Veterans, Thanksgiving and Christmas Day....How about American Family Day? We don't need a paid vacation day off for that. We just need to set one aside. Some may say we have family day already and it is the big meal on Thanksgiving or the kids coming home for December 25. That's nice...but those are days of excessive eating and shopping for gifts.

Let's set aside one Sunday per year to fellowship as a family; read together; pray and sing together. If we do that, that one Sunday then becomes two...and three...and pretty soon, we find out we are hooked and woohoo...we're rolling like the Von Trapps in Sound of Music or the Duggers!!

OUR FAMILY MINISTERING YEARS AGO
 IN PETERSBURG, ILLINOIS
My family is very blessed as we do that several times per month for many years, from when the kids were little and involved with musical instruments. Now, in the past two years, their grand parents have joined us as we added several new senior homes and visit each, monthly, to minister;sing; pray and I share a message from God with the folks there. We kick it off with an after-church Sunday lunch at our home with between 7-10 folks each time, depending on who is going with us! It is really heart warming to watch our teenage sons share their musical gifts with seniors in wheelchairs or 95 year old ladies with walkers and most Sundays especially, these folks have their families visiting. Most of these families never go to church or hear the Gospel, so I get to tell them about Jesus or watch my mother in law share a wonderful testimony, with her sweet home Alabama accent...while my wife sings a Southern Gospel classic to them!

The family that shares and loves and praises Jesus together, stays together. One of the silver linings of these dark and rough economic times is that all across America, young adults moving back home and/or sticking closer to their folks.

Friends, let us all try and leverage these opportunities, not to make scrapbook picture memories alone, but to begin building a legacy - a living legacy. Friends, THIS is what we are called to do. You may not hear this kind of thing in church, but you should...and you are hearing it here now!

Here is what our Father in Heaven told His people...and make no mistake WE TOO are His people, and if we do not do these things, we will be held accountable. Being a parent is the biggest/greatest and most fulfilling occupation we will ever have.

“Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. (Deuteronomy 6:4-9 ESV)

So come on, America, WHY NOT FAMILY DAY? IF NOT EVERY DAY, HOW ABOUT NEXT SUNDAY?! COME ON, LET'S ROLL, BABY!!!!
TOMORROW:  BUILDING A LEGACY THROUGH MY SONS
THURSDAY:    BUILDING A LEGACY THROUGH MY DAUGHTER
FRIDAY:         RETURN OF FAMILY WORSHIP
SATURDAY:    WHAT IF I HAVE NO TIME?
