REFLECTIONS ON THE RING - A BOOK REVIEW

An Ordinary Woman’s Extraordinary Tale of How She Saved Her Marriage and Family
by Lori Columbo Dunham

One of the more outstanding features of the close-knit families of America's melting pot is
continuity. Continuity, as described in traditional values or "just like my grandma did it" or "this is just how we always did it in my family" or "the old country".  Being a traditionalist myself, observing this quality in others brings quiet satisfaction, in times of rejoicing with those who carry on this lifestyle. This kind of tradition is what Lori Columbo imagined, or even expected, as she visualized her story-book wedding...with the Church, and the priest and the flowers, bridesmaids - the whole enchilada (to mix ethnic metaphors).

Oh, how one little escapade can change the direction of an entire life! This true story of the young woman from Michigan who unexpectedly became pregnant in 2001 will make both make you sad, squirm and even shed a tear while praying this does not happen to anyone you know. It is a bit unusual for a man like me to be reading what some may term a book version of "a chick flick", but it is a gripping tale where even a hard-nosed preacher like me started wondering "well, how is this going to turn out"?

Reflections on the Ring took a lot of soul-searching, courage and yes, faith to write. It was encouraging to me to see how Lori never stepped away from her traditional faith and turned it into something proactive that will impact her family for decades to come. I will encourage the reader to grasp the conundrum she faced when transitioning from her dream wedding to the nightmarish, almost mind-altering experience of getting married in a South Florida courthouse in front of a Judge! Her emotional conflicts and anxiety come over in the book as she tries to come to terms with marrying a man who bought her a Cubic Zirconia wedding ring! Here she was, with her 110 year old heirloom wedding ring from her great- grandmother, having recently given up a 2.5 carat engagement ring from a man she discovered she did not love, just to marry Dave in a cold impersonal courtroom. Could this get any more mind-boggling?

To her credit and here is where the minister in me warmed up to Lori, the person - she turned to the only Place she could find comfort and even peace. Even when things were darkest.... Even when bills were tough to pay.... Even when Dave was tough to love, she kept the Faith. What I loved about this "page-turner" is the various Scripture references therein, which are placed strategically along the narrative to tie into what was occurring at the time in Lori's life! More impressive was her reliance on the writings from the wonderful prayer ministry of Stormie Omartian, with whom I am acquainted through my association (from 2006) with the Colorado-based National Day of Prayer Task Force. Stormie was once a speaker at one of our prayer summits up in the amazing Rocky Mountains, where praying to our Glorious God comes really easy (after one beholds the majestic mountains).

Stormie's books and instructions on prayer and coping with life in general and specific situations guided Lori through the rough first years of her marriage, which are always the crucial years - the foundation, if you will. You know, a lot of women marry men promising themselves they will change this or that trait or behavior. Some even promise themselves and their families they will convert a non-believing spouse to the Christian faith. That almost never works. But what is evident in this book is with the right heart, proper wisdom guided by Godly experience (Stormie Omartian), miracles do happen. Families do stick together. Miracles babies are born into loving homes. All of this brings hope. In a time of so much evil and darkness and anxiety, I recommend "REFLECTIONS ON THE RING" to you. It is a sincere recommendation because no matter what stage a relationship may be in, something can be learned, affirmed or just revealed from reading about another's walk through life.

Here is a passage from Lori Columbo-Dunham's book which I found very uplifting and beautiful. May it encourage you to pick it up and spend a couple hours reading it:

● When the unexpected happens, lead with your gut, follow your heart, trail with your head.
● Live by your conscience and take responsibility for your actions.
● Be conscious and respectful of his built-in psychological need to escape to his cave when warranted.
● Always be prepared for God’s destiny for you especially when it seems to contradict your own plans for your life.

A FORTNIGHT OF PRAYER - AMERICA STRESSED OUT

DAY 8
WILDFIRES, FLOODS, TORNADOES - DESPAIR
Jesus warned us of these last days and as America faces them and handles them with class and dignified tears, as compared to others....quiet desperation is starting to set in. Here is what the Lord Jesus said "...For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are but the beginning of the birth pains. (Matthew 24:7-8 ESV)

Each Spring, devastating tornadoes go through the Midwestern USA with impunity. Tornado Alley from Oklahoma/Missouri/Kentucky/Tennessee/Northern Alabama kill dozens of nice folks each year. As we say in Joplin, Mo last year - entire towns can be decimated. Just this past week alone, hurricane Debby blasted southern Florida and Mobile, Alabama with a massive blow and storm clouds which looked like that mile-wide deadly tornado which destroyed almost half of Tuscaloosa, Alabama over a year ago. Parts of Pensacola, Fl. Other coastal cities in Florida are under massive amounts of water.

In the west, massive forest wildfires are out of control and not just costing billions of dollars of damage to property, but altering the lives of many thousands of good American citizens. Colorado Springs is the home to many Christian ministries who witness to and disciple and literally feed thousands here and worldwide. Their reactions have been a blessing to watch, while we grieve with them. There really is a difference between a Christian and those of the world.

Many look for answers, but friends, the only answer can be found in Jesus and Prayer. To begin to understand, we look at what He said in Matthew 5:45b "...He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous". With that in mind, all we can do is turn to Him in prayer and seek comfort in Him....because.... it is going to get ten times worse! If you read what Jesus said will follow all the famine and wars and earthquakes (and yes, fires, storms etc), it is NOT pretty: “Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and put you to death, and you will be hated by all nations for my name's sake. And then many will fall away and betray one another and hate one another. And many false prophets will arise and lead many astray. And because lawlessness will be increased, the love of many will grow cold. But the one who endures to the end will be saved. And this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come (!!!) (Matthew 24:9-14 ESV)

So why Prayer? Here is what the great EM Bounds said about that:
Prayer in the time of trouble brings comfort, help, hope, and blessings, which, while not removing the trouble, enable the saint to better bear it and to submit to the will of God. Prayer opens the eyes to see God’s hand in trouble. Prayer does not interpret God’s providences, but it does justify them and recognize God in them.
Prayer enables us to see wise ends in trouble.
Prayer in trouble drives us away from unbelief, saves us from doubt, and delivers from all vain and foolish questionings because of our painful experiences.

So Father God, we just pray for those who are in pain, shock, grief and at a total loss to understand what is really happening to them in both Florida, Alabama and Colorado Springs, Lord. They did nothing to deserve the destruction of all they have worked hard for to....and to now see it under flood or burnt up in raging fires. But Lord, let them and us know that You are the God of goodness and compassion and Your Love never fails us because Great is Your Faithfulness, Lord unto us.

Father comfort the victims of these natural disasters in their spirits and then restore them in the physical lives and give them a hope that if they seek You, and repent and trust in the Savior, that they too should have nothing to worry about. Father they need the assurance that this life is but a fleeting vapor and the next life is what's important. Lord we know that many will blame You for their losses, but draw them near to Thee my God and my King and my Creator as You draw us into Your Loving arms and help us all to make sense of this through the Knowledge that Thou art Sovereign and in control and has our very lives in Your Mighty Hands and that if we are truly Yours and believe in You, we really have nothing to worry about, since You have paved the way for our redemption. Help us to help others to see that while they too grieve with us over what is now happening.

Lord and finally, I pray for the firemen and other first responders who are doing amazing work to contain these fires or rescue others from the floods. I pray for their strength and their futures as well as their families. I pray that You bless them for all they do for others, selflessly, in Jesus Holy and Mighty Name, amen.

THINK ON THESE THINGS - TUESDAY

Everyone has a worldview or a way of looking at things! Therefore a worldview is not just how we look at things but how we use that information to then act according to that specific belief system.

For us, a Biblical Worldview is at a premium. A Christian either has one, or not! Sadly, the world renowned pollster and author George Barna has found that only 9% of us Born-again Christians even have such a worldview! This is not only outrageous, but indicative of the woeful lack of biblical knowledge, application and discernment in the modern American church!

This video is 17 minutes of a 25 minute message recorded on July 16, 2011 for the Florida based Christian Television Network's Decatur, Illinois affiliate - WLCF. This is an episode of SPOTLIGHT which airs weekly from Springfield to Danville, Illinois; parts of Central Florida (including Orlando) as well as now - Ghana!

I attempt to briefly discuss, a Biblical Worldview.  May it bless you. Amen!
