ROCK SOLID FAITH FOR TROUBLED TIMES - PART 2

DANGER: SOUL IN PERIL OVER SLY MODERN DECEPTIONS- Mindfulness & Contemplative Prayer
4 Now this I say lest anyone should deceive you with persuasive words.
The first warning (Col 2:4 above) concerns deceptive modern ideas about Christianity, Christology and the Certainty of your salvation, which sound good – but are completely ungodly and unbiblical.

It is almost understandable why even sensible Christians could fall prey to some of the faulty teachings we see and hear these days because they sound so good, even biblical and makes the person feel good. In times of trouble, doubt, temptation and trial, if a brand new well-dressed and well-spoken author/speaker and even singer comes along with a new exciting take on an old problem, the appeal and response are tremendous. The bookstores – both Christian and secular – are full of books from every imaginable angle to make a person feel good about their lives….except the one angle that really matters. This is the matter of sin.

Every problem under the sun begin, results from and will never be resolved until we deal with the matter of sin., Instead, we have teaching from million selling books which tell us it is “Our Best Life Now”. Just in case anyone is confused, the best life for the Christian is NOT now, but in the eternal Kingdom of the Christ. Tell the Christian who is being literally destroyed in the persecuted lands, that his/her best life is now!!  The heresy does not get any better than “The Power of I Am”…..not “I Am Who I Am” (Yahweh”)….but “I am”… as in self-declarations of Biblical principles.  (No photos will be posted of these books here, so as to not promote them).

Now, there is nothing wrong at all with claiming the Promises of God as in “I am more than a conqueror”… or “I am a child of God, saved and redeemed”…..or “I am the chief of sinners….until Jesus rescued me”. This is proclaiming Bible truths. What is troubling and a violation of the Second Commandment is a famous pastor, who knows better, taking the Name of the Lord in vain to sell books!

But there are other deceptive teachings and practices which unsuspecting believers should not only be aware of, but should avoid like the plague!  Two increasingly popular practices from very faulty teachings are Contemplative Prayer and Mindfulness. BEWARE OF BOTH!

CONTEMPLATIVE PRAYER:
In its simplest definition, Contemplative prayer is also called “centering prayer” or meditation. Now this meditation is not the same as the Bible calls for in Psalm 1 where we “meditate”, study, chew on and understand what the Word of God is saying to us. No, this centering meditation and contemplation seeks mystic experiences with God where Jesus is hardly ever in the picture. It requires emptying one’s mind and not praying on what is canonized Scripture, but what the gurus of this movement tells us what we may do to achieve “Spiritual Formation”.

One of the dangers of this mysticism, where the practitioner sits in silence waiting to hear from God, while centering on a passage of some book by Thomas Merton, Dallas Willard or even chanting a bible verse/passage over and over, is that it can lead a person away from both Christ and Christianity. I know a person it actually happened to from Connecticut.  She was/is an avid blogger and stay at home mother of three children who was so caught up in being open to deceptive new thoughts and teachings she walked away from Christ, to her own eternal loss! This person had elevated the teachings of the Emergent Church and Ecumenism that she started reading, promoting and practicing. Ancient mysticism from both Hindu, some Catholic theologians and alleged Christian ones became woven fully into her spirit...and all of this while going to a mainline church in the center of Connecticut.

We had several disagreements including one with her co-“meditators” who instantly branded me intolerant. One day, Jessica wrote some chilling words.  She had gone to her church for the final time, looked around and “contemplated”  a while. She wrote that she looked at all the people with whom she had grown up her entire life and felt suddenly quite alienated from them. She felt , in fact, alienated from the entire state of being in a Christian church. She then said she felt sad, as then and there, she made the decision to walk away from the church, Christianity and reject Jesus Christ as the only Way, the Truth and the Life!

This is the kind of end result of years of so-called “open-mindedness” towards every strange philosophy of man and the devil.  This is the fruit of messing with strange mystic garbage, saying it is based on the Bible and promoting it to many, while fellowshipping with like-minded lost souls. I broke off any contact with this person because she and her family plunged headlong into pagan Hinduism, Buddhist “meditation” and all sorts of potential Baal worship. To the elite and the well-connected, this is the in-thing and makes them feel enlightened. To Holy God of Heaven and the Bible, this is storing up wrath for That Day.

The slide into eternal separation from God, first began, because people listen to strange and deceptive words, which became practices. Which leads us to a new strange and unbiblical concept called “Mindfulness”.
MINDFULNESS: Potentially, this is even more dangerous to the future eternal homes of millions of souls, as if Contemplative Prayer/Spiritual Formation were not enough. Mindlessness is leading people away from the Gospel weekly, while sounding good, easy and oh-so-modern and “cool”. In fact, this fits right into the template of those who call themselves “spiritual”.

According to dictionary definition, “mindfulness” is about focusing on a person’s awareness, mostly at the current moment, while concentrating fully on experiential stuff: thoughts, feelings and physical sensations. It has nothing to do with Jesus, God, The Bible or the Holy Spirit.  In fact, its origins are Eastern Mysticism, Buddhism and Hinduism rolled up into one! In fact the word “mindfulness” is a translation from the Buddhist “pali” term called “sati”.

Proponents of this ungodly practice say it is good for Christians to do for good health, stress removal etc…etc…just like they do when they promote alleged “Christian” Yoga. Both Mindfulness and Yoga cannot be associated with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. They are an anathema to the pure Word of Christ and His Word which said “Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus (Philippians 2:5)“. If you speak to any true Hindu and practitioner of yoga, they will tell you exactly what it is – Hinduism.  Every movement is based on the “theology” of that earth religion.  Mindfulness is the same.  If the people promoting this stuff in public schools and general society were honest with you, they would tell the truth that it is part of the Eightfold Path OF BUDDHISM! Google it yourself. This will not be promoted in this article.

There is a huge reason the Apostle Paul warns of these nice sounding ideas and diverse philosophies. Who would be against stress relief and being “in your right mind”. The issue begins as to where the beliefs used to address these issues originate. People go to hell – the state of eternal and FOREVER separation from God – not because of what they do, but because of what they believe. Many in modern Christianity which is a mile wide and half inch deep, were never born again and are easily led astray by these modern easy fixes for peace, joy and contentment. Some authentic Christians may even be fooled by this for a while. Both will face an Righteous God on Judgement Day with no answer for this deadly folly.

Of the many evils out there for their “Spiritual Formation” these two are the most dangerous, because they have been proven 1000 times over to  lead people away from Jesus Christ – the Creator and Sustainer of Life. A lot of these practices are promoted by the Emergent Church and their supporters in the megachurches.  (Click here to read more on the Emergent Church).  Our job as Authentic Believers and Followers of Christ is to stay faithful to Him, remain planted like trees by living water and be obedient to His Spirit. Anything else will cause loss – permanent and deadly.

CENTERING CONFUSION

CP - THE PATH AWAY FROM CHRIST
(Book Recommendation included)
Imagine my horror when I learned that a friend of mine told me recently that she was going to a retreat so she can focus on her "Centering Prayer". Why? I have seen that kind of slippery slope before, when someone, whose Christian walk I once cared about, went from practicing this CP and other mystical mediation....to becoming a FULL FLEDGED BUDDHIST!!!

Centering Prayer is part of the Contemplative Prayer movement which leads one into a silent position "before God" so we can empty ourselves, in order to "hear from that same God". The official definition from their Centering Prayer website calls it " a method of silent prayer that prepares us to receive the gift of contemplative prayer, prayer in which we experience God's presence within us, closer than breathing, closer than thinking, closer than consciousness itself. This method of prayer is both a relationship with God and a discipline to foster that relationship".

The problem is, this is NOT what we are supposed to be doing! In actuality, what this does is lead many away from the TRUE Meditation and systematic study of the Word of God, to an altered state of consciousness and need for more and more intense EMOTIONAL fulfillment. The person involved in CP is then no longer fully engaged in the Word of God and seeking revelation and illumination THROUGH His Word, but is now seeking to find his/her true identity via the "inner self" and calling it God! They are now seeking after an 'experience' rather than an Encounter with the Living God, through His Word and His Holy Spirit!

Nowhere in the thoughts and discussions of those who are fully engaged in this heresy, is the Gospel proclaimed and prayed into. What happened to this one person, who ended up walking away from Christ and the Church and started chanting pagan Hindu mantras and adopting Buddhist/Zen ways....was that she was told was okay, by their "gospel writer" and CP "guru" Thomas Merton - ""Contemplative consciousness," say Merton, is "a trans-cultural, trans-religious, trans-formed consciousness … it can shine through this or that system, religious or irreligious"(Thoughts on the East, p.34).

If this CP nonsense is "trans-religious" according to the CP's top man Merton, this movement has ALREADY REJECTED JESUS - and He will reject them on the Day of the Lord, in front of God's Courtroom! When He said in John 14:6 "I am the WAY, the TRUTH and the LIFE", Jesus meant the ONLY way! He said the Way is Narrow and only a FEW find it. This CP thing, through which you can now find inner peace and meditate through, not just the so-called "God of Christianity", but the 300 pagan and/or animal gods of Hinduism and the philosophy of Buddhism will lead many straight into hell!

How can I, a man of God and supposedly of "Love" say such a thing? Well, I know a Chinese brother who was once a Buddhist, who told me over and over what they believe and what it means. For some of these professing Christians to now join the ungodly Centering/Contemplative or Breath Prayer movement to get closer to their concept of "God", they have to deny the reality of what these 'religious systems' (which Merton promotes above) teach and what they really are - a gateway to eternal separation from God!

Here are some of the Contemplative Prayer authors to stay as far away from as possible: Thomas Keating; Brennan Manning or anything by Teresa of Avila and anything by Richard Foster! Beware of these people and their books! BE DISCERNING! GOD DEMANDS IT OF US!

THINK ON THESE THINGS - MONDAY

CP, TM AND OM

NOTE: (CP, TM and OM are not an Acrostic of a Law Firm or the initials of the Three Stooges.....read on......)!!!

In troubled times, people seek comfort in many ways.

Some look deep inside themselves for the answers.  In fact, many of the great self-help gurus of the past few decades became multi-millionaires selling just that concept. From the loud navel-gazing of Tony Robbins to the teachings of eastern mysticism, all have a form of godliness...but it is the god of this world.

Some look to the sky, without knowing how to ask. In a country where almost 91% of adults have NO Biblical worldview, this is easy to grasp.

Now comes a new thing...actually a New Age thing, which more and more people inside the christian church are getting caught up in. It is the wrong kind of meditation and something called Contemplative Prayer (CP). In some circles, it is called Centering Prayer.

But is it Biblical Prayer? Is it what Jesus called for when He said "...when you pray.." three times in a row in Matthew 6:6? The conclusion is - no way!

But what are the differences? Here are some of my thoughts in brief, as I attempt to get us to think about the simplicity and clarity of True Christian prayer.

Concerning CP and Christ-based Praying:

One is based on eastern mysticism, the other, not. One is based on self-realization through looking inside yourself, the other is not. One is based on emptying your mind and letting in universal "truths" in, the other is not....and on and on. One is even promoted by certain christian 'teachers' and speakers like Beth Moore, the other is not.

If you are ever invited to meditate with someone or are tempted to look into it, be very wary and extremely careful how you react. To follow this philosophy will put you in real and immediate spiritual danger!

But you ask "It sounds sooooo good! What could be wrong with meditation?"

Nothing! Psalm 1:1-2 leads us into an exhortation to meditate on the Lord "day and night". But if you look at the true meaning of the word "meditate", it means to 'speak, utter, proclaim, study and ponder' the Word of God! This is the LITERAL meaning. The reason we are supposed to do this to get the know the WORD better, which John 1:1 and 1 John 1:1 tells us - is Christ!

Joshua 1 says in verse 8 "This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success".

This means we are to speak the Word of God! This includes prayer where we read the Word of God back to Him in praise and worship!

This also means we are to actively walk the talk by walking out the elements of the Faith of Christ minute by minute for the rest of our lives!

This does not mean sitting down in some weird lotus position and starting to breathe deeply before you proceed to "empty your mind".

This does not mean you then "center" yourself by focusing on some one word of passage from your favorite mystic writer or even the Bible and then go beyond the Thoughts of God.

This does not mean now, with an empty mind, opening up your spirit to what you perceive to be 'closeness with God'!!!!

This does mean you are on a path you may never recover from, because of it is Self-realization you want, God will give it to you...and I guarantee you won't like it!

Psalm 46:10

Many proponents of CP quote Psalm 46:10 as their biblical basis. In fact, there are so many websites promoting "Christian Meditation" that it is so easy for seekers to be led astray! Almost ALL of them - to a man - quote Psalm 46:10 which most translations say definitively to "Be still and know that I am God".

The ACTUAL literal translation of Psalm 46:10 is from the New American Standard Bible: " Cease striving and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth."

This means just that - quit trying to do things your way. Quit trying to be like those who built the Tower of Babel to show themselves just as wise as God. Quit trying to do reach God using man's ways rather than God's....literally God means "quit striving or 'raphah' (Hebrew) leave it alone to ME - GOD. I am all about Praise, Glory and Worship"!!!!

Does this sound like eastern mystic centering prayer to you??!! This is why knowing the True meaning of the Word is so important and why listening to men turn it into allegory is so dangerous!

TRANSCENDENTAL MEDITATION & OM

What the gurus of CP are really practicing is just an anglicized or westernized version of the hindu-based Transcendental Meditation (TM)! This is the same cult to which the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi and others (like the Beatles) from the 1960's drug culture belonged!

The TM official website themselves describe TM as a "technique is based on the ancient Vedic tradition of enlightenment in India. This knowledge has been handed down by Vedic masters from generation to generation for thousands of years. About 50 years ago, Maharishi — the representative in our age of the Vedic tradition — introduced Transcendental Meditation to the world, restoring the knowledge and experience of higher states of consciousness at this critical time for humanity. When we teach the Transcendental Meditation technique today, we maintain the same procedures used by teachers thousands of years ago for maximum effectiveness".

TM uses a sanskrit symbol for OM-   as its chief mantra chant. I am not even going to explain what this means. It will make no sense to try and describe what all the "vibes" they get from chanting this thing. What Biblical Christians should understand before they even contemplate being a part of this heresy are the Word of Jesus about all this chanting and Centering Prayer and such here from Matthew 6:7 " "And when you are praying, do not use meaningless repetition as the Gentiles do, for they suppose that they will be heard for their many words."

In other words, the Creator of the Universe has just smacked down those who practice this gibberish, which worshiping their animal gods like cows and dogs, by saying "their prayers will never be heard"! Jesus was referring to the Egyptians, Moabites and other religions around Jerusalem...but today, it can refer to just about anything, worldwide, which practices the same!

Is this what people what? Their "prayers" and meditation reach only as high as the ceiling....because I guarantee you, this is where all that stuff will get them!

HOW TO PRAY THE JESUS WAY:

Over the "no-matter-how-long-it-takes" time, I will dissect phrase by phrase, the LORD'S PRAYER.  Jesus gave us the Lord's Prayer not to chant, but as the Guidebook to KNOW how to pray to the Father.

As a Prayer Warrior and leader in the Prayer Movement, I can testify to the Power of such an exercise and how it can really improve you Christian prayer life. If this exercise is done by a soul, which  has been regenerated by Holy Spirit and is tuned into the Pure and Holy Heart of God, it will lead to what Psalm 1:1-2 is encouraging - meditating on the Word, day and night!

Amen!

"Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength." (Mark 12:30)

THE COMMENCEMENT SPEECH YOU WILL NEVER HEAR @ THIS YEAR'S GRADUATION: CLASS OF 2017

We are not only living in troubled times, but the future looks even bleaker. The generations coming up behind us, who are within 25-50 years of passing from the scene are lost, hopeless, selfish, corrupted and full of nothing but empty knowledge. Never have so many, acquired so much, that cost so much, that will count for nothing, in this life and the next.

Not only has the system - whatever that is - failed almost all our young people, but parents, from the Baby Boomer parents up to now, have allowed schools, communities and even churches, to short change them. For decades, graduates (from high school to college) have been sent out into the world with no solid spiritual food or the knowledge of the One Who created them. For decades, young people are constantly told, by those who will one day wish they were wearing millstone neckties instead, that all they needed was to look inside themselves....and "use barricades and obstacles as opportunities" but never mind "the answer is out there" because "all you need to do is dig deeper" as "the answer is in you"!

That is the biggest pile-up since the post clean-up after the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness combined. How can someone, who has absolutely no foundation in Truth, i.e. - the Word of God, look into their empty souls for an answer? Precisely! What this post-modern thinking really is, would classify as empty, godless, cheap pseudo-buddhism and its step-child "contemplative prayer" rolled into one. Every current survey back up the "empty soul syndrome". The Pew Research Center's just released in depth survey found that Christians in America had dropped from over 78% in 2007 to 70% less than eight years later. Of course, the number of "nones" or believe nothing people has risen from 16% of the population to almost 23% in the same period.

Now those people, the "nones", have always been there. They just answered more honestly this time. Secondly, of the 70% that call themselves "Christian" because that is what an American is supposed to be, the actual number of born-again, Bible-believing Christians falls to a scary and incredible 9%! This was gleaned from several Barna and Pew Surveys from the last few years about what we called "A Biblical Worldview".  The stunning 9% of real Bible-believing Christians is equal to 28.8 million of the current US Population of 320 million!

IT IS EVEN WORSE WITH MILLENNIALS! ONLY 4% OF THEM ARE BORN-AGAIN CHRISTIANS WITH A BIBLICAL WORLD VIEW! WHO DO YOU THINK GOD WILL HOLD RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS ABOMINATION??!! YOU, THE CHURCH, EVERY SINGLE LIBERAL, POLITICIAN, ACADEMIC..... AND US IF WE DID NOTHING ABOUT IT.

The actual status and positional salvation of someone who calls themselves a Christian are based on what they believe about Jesus Christ, as their Lord and Savior; Repentance and/or change of heart, lifestyle etc from sin to living for God; what their view of God is and His Word.  A biblical worldview is the complete view of the world
based on God’s revealed truth, the Bible, which directs our daily lives and how we think, act and interact. This sort of thing is at a premium these days.

While it may be impossible to turn this entire Titanic-sized ship around, there is no way we should give throw our hands up and walk away. Let us start here:
Each year around this time, the air is full with the sound of commencement speeches in our high schools and college campuses.

Each year around this time, comes the obligatory attack on prayer and God, by an entirely humanistic, secular, godless world.

Each year around this time, high schools and colleges would have politicians and “celebrity” commencement speakers who fill our departing graduates with such ungodly garbage, that it is amazing even 10% of them leave college with a fraction of a Biblical Worldview.

Each year one would be hard-pressed to find an invited speaker who gives a message of the real hope and encouragement, which lasts a lifetime.
The Lord Himself showed us how to live in these times. His Word is so rich and powerful, they need no explanation! So here is the “speech” you will never hear during Commencement Exercises in 2017 or anytime now or sadly, in the near future:

THE 2017 COMMENCEMENT SPEECH YOU WILL NEVER HEAR:4
CONCERNING THE DIFFICULT TIMES AHEAD:
“For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.” James 1:3-4
CONCERNING STRENGTH IN DIFFICULT TIMES:
“Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the instructions Moses gave you. Do not deviate from them, turning either to the right or to the left. Then you will be successful in everything you do. Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do”. Joshua 1: 7-8
CONCERNING WISDOM IN DIFFICULT TIMES:
“Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone” Colossians 4:5-6
CONCERNING ATTITUDES OF A CHRISTIAN:
“And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.” Philippians 4:8
CONCERNING YOUR REACTION TO TRIALS AS A CHRISTIAN:
“Our fathers disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, that we may share in his holiness. No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.” Hebrews 12:10-11
CONCERNING PLANS THAT DO NOT COME FROM GOD:
“Look here, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we are going to a certain town and will stay there a year. We will do business there and make a profit.” How do you know what your life will be like tomorrow? Your life is like the morning fog—it’s here a little while, then it’s gone. What you ought to say is, “If the Lord wants us to, we will live and do this or that.” Otherwise you are boasting about your own plans, and all such boasting is evil”. James 4: 13-16
CONCERNING YOUR WALK WITH GOD THROUGH CHRIST:
“Oh, the joys of those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or stand around with sinners, or join in with mockers. But they delight in the law of the Lord, meditating on it day and night. They are like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season. Their leaves never wither, and they prosper in all they do”. Psalm 1: 1-3
CONCERNING THE LOVE OF MONEY IN GOD’S ECONOMY:
“Don’t love money; be satisfied with what you have. For God has said, “I will never fail you. I will never abandon you.” Hebrews 13:5
CONCERNING YOUR LOVE OF GOD:
“Fear of the Lord is the foundation of true knowledge, but fools despise Wisdom and Discipline” Proverbs 1:7

"Fear the Lord, Keep His Commandments for this is the whole duty of man"
Ecclesiastes 12:13

“And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength”. Mark 12:30

You would not hear these brief but life changing exhortations on any campus of any great or small American school/college. You may not even hear the Word of God proclaimed in some so-called “Christian” schools. However, these timeless Truths never change. They are for us all.
