PURSUIT WORTHY OF CONSIDERATION

""Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you...Matthew 7:7"
We all love watching a good fast chase, whether it is a car chase in the movies or on TV, or a boat race on the lake.  We even think It’s cute when one of our pet dogs playfully chases the other one around the back yard. We involve ourselves in our own chases at various times in our lives. In our teens and early twenties, the more educationally ambitious of us may chase down multiple college degrees (not me – one is enough). Those who are more bent towards business take risks and joyfully suffer the birth pangs of launching, maintaining and growing their own small business, as they chase their dream of the freedom of self-employment and probable riches. in general, though, it does seem as if sometimes, everything else is a chase, race or making haste.

The common goal of these various chases, from the self-motivated  young entrepreneur to the person who obtains the right educational background for a better job and benefits in order to raise a family or accumulate enough of a nest egg for later on, is success. There is absolutely nothing wrong with success and the process it takes to get there. As long as everything is legally,  ethically and morally done – the sky is the limit. Millions are willing to go into major debt to, excuse me, kiss the sky, in this pursuit.

Most times oft, than not, though, matters of the soul are completely ignored in this paper chase. (The paper chase mentioned in this article is all about the financial documents which represent wealth held by those who primarily seek only worldly success). Increasingly, with very few exceptions (less than 10%) the vast majority of people under the age of 40 have little or no faith in the God of Heaven. Men and women instinctively know that we were ALL created with the Law of God (His commands) written on our hearts. Even those who have not heard the Gospel possess this.  It is called the conscience where we learn right from wrong. Even those who hate God have a conscience. They just block it out. They just don’t pursue Him.

In the greatest sermon ever preached – the Sermon on the Mount, God Himself – through His Son the Creator, teaches many Eternal Truths about Life on earth. Almost all of the Teachings of Jesus are counter-cultural and against any of the worldly thinking of man. There is so much in this Greatest Message of All Times, but what is relevant here is the statement of Matthew 7:7 "Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you"

In short, the Lord recommended the following three specific actions – all in the present tense:
-          Ask
-          Seek
-          Knock on the door

Those in pursuit of success in the Natural (through Education, Business etc.) have no problem at all with any of those three. Whether we work for a company or run the company or teach a junior college class for a living, around age 30-40 we have done more than our fair share of asking, seeking and knocking on doors.  A 75% or more failure rate never stops us in our pursuit of excellence in our chosen career paths. The majority of us would just take deep breaths and move on to the next thing. However, for some reason, on the supremely important matter of eternity, the hard work of research into the Truth – the True Truth – is left on the cutting floor!

It is very telling that the very same committed and purpose-driven people who would work 70-90 hours per week to study part time while working would not take an hour of their entire week, on one day, to see if the claims and promises of God are true. A small business owner would be the last person to get paid at his business, while getting no sleep or vacation, but he or she would press so hard in one direction, that the real direction that matters will also be neglected.

Even so, Jesus has a proposition for those who are worn down, beaten up, tired out, flamed out and just plain over their heads in the hot pursuit of success, the World’s Way. He has three simple words: Ask, Seek, Knock. What’s behind these three doors is nothing magical, but it IS something Eternal. It is Rest. It is Peace. It is Joy. It is Contentment. It is Heaven.

Success the world’s way could and should get you that – a comfortable successful life….in THIS Life ONLY!  But the Pursuit of Heavenly Treasure lasts forever. For those are interested in what comes next after this swift fleeting life.  Again – it’s free ….and so simple. In fact it is so simple, most do not believe it cost them nothing, thereby missing the boat.

ASK:
Like everything else in matters of eternity, it comes down to the Heart – the Spiritual Heart. To even get to the point of asking, we need to be able see and then know, that for which we are asking or requesting. Scripture, in Ephesians 1:18, cries out to us “open the Eyes of My Heart, Lord”.  There is nothing in the make-up of a human being which is worthy of us being even qualified to "ASK" the Great God of Heaven for anything. It is by sheer mercy and grace we are alive and then have the means to live comfortably, and function at any capacity. The sooner we realize this, the quicker we will make haste to the Throne Room of God to ask Him to be the Guiding Light of Our Lives.

SEEK:
Anyone who is born again, instinctively knows we were near seeking and finding a relationship with the True God of Heaven and our Creator. At some point in life, we may have been seeking for the great answers of life - (who am I, why am I here etc...). However, if you look at some of the "-sims*" that led countless millions astray, none of them sought after the real God of Heaven as found in the Bible. (Think of "isms" like extentialism, atheism, communism etc...etc...). All of these "systems" were thought up by mortal men. All of these men had disturbing final words and horrible fruit of their labors and teachings. Jesus is inviting us to search Him out AND He gave us the most powerful flashlight and road map ever- The Bible. To those who have been redeemed, He sends the Holy Spirit to continue the life long pursuit of seeking out eternal truths in through Prayer and the Full Counsel of God. These are the only riches which are worth nailing down first, before all else. Seek and look for Him, He and all Heaven are within reach!

KNOCK:
The portals of Heaven still remain open to all who ask, seek and then knock. The original meaning of the word "knock" is to literally "beat the door down with a stick"....or perseverance, persistence and never giving up in your pursuit of this amazing God. How do we knock on Heaven's door? We do so by daily, consistent pressing into the very Throne of Heaven, where we camp and not leave until God provides the guidance, direction and answers we are seeking and asking.

All there active processes imply and ongoing and well, active response on our part. They proceed out of a heart set on God. In all the great chases and pursuits we can have in this life, at any age, this is the only one built to last.

PRAY FOR.....PROVISION

Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all (Matthew 6:31-32)
These are very reassuring words from the Savior Himself. Remember, He is the One Who feed thousands with a few loaves and fishes. So can we trust Him? Sure we can! Lord said in Psalm 37:25 that the righteous and their offspring do not beg bread. God always provides.

While this may seem like an unlikely statement to those who do not know Him personally, nevertheless, it remains true. God first provided food and work for Adam to do in the Garden of Eden, and it was all good. When Adam and Eve brought sin into the world, God provided the first blood sacrifice to cover for sin, when He killed an animal to provide its skin as clothing for His two wayward creations.

God provides the rain to water the crops, fill the reservoirs and make things look green and alive. He provides the sun to make the irrigated crops grow and bring color and light to life. He provides for our sustenance. He provides the economy where things multiply and make no sense sometimes except when we have dollars and cents in our pockets. He provides the doctors and hospitals for sick and the concept of government to rule over the affairs of mankind, for this age only. He provides. He sustains. He gives all of this and more.

Here are His Words and we believe it:
Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you (Matthew 7:7)
And whatever you ask in prayer, you will receive, if you have faith.” (Matthew 21:22)
Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it. (John 14:13-14)
If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. (John 15:7)

Believe it in faith and He will answer. He answers prayer sometimes in direct ways, but all the time, in a form which is both better for us (even if we can’t visualize it at the moment) and in accordance with His Sovereign will. We should not lose sight that we are the ones dependent on Him, not the other way around. We can be like those who are perishing and focus only on acquiring things and a good time only in this brief mortal life, but it is wiser for your eternal state of you do things God’s way….and see it as such.

Remember and recall the following truths, from the Oracles of Promise:
For the LORD God is a sun and shield; the LORD bestows favor and honor. No good thing does he withhold from those who walk uprightly. (Psalm 84:11)
“And whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do what pleases Him. (1 John 3:22)

Oh most kind, gracious and ever-loving  Abba Father, Who sits on the Throne of Heaven, we bless Your Holy and Most Righteous Name, Yahweh Jireh – our God Who provides life and breath; our God Who provides the bed we sleep in and the roof over our heads; our God Who provides our loved ones who love us conditionally; our God Who gives us the rivers for recreation, the oceans for food and holds up the birds of the air with the Power of Your Words.  You hang the earth on its axis at a perfect angle that we may not disintegrate and You are still working to create scores of galaxies and stars every year. Lord we worship and adore and thank You that the God Who can do all this and more, is more than enough to supply our daily needs and wishes. We trust You and lift up all our requests to You now and at all times, even though you know what we need, even before we ask it of You, Father.  We know You are the God Who provides according to the riches in Christ Jesus, Who is Lord and Master of our Lives. We trust and surrender everything concerning our daily lives, health and welfare to Your Mighty and Sovereign Will, in the Name of the Messiah Jesus Who said, “ask and you shall receive, if you ask in My Name”. Amen and amen.

IT'S FIVE O'CLOCK SOMEWHERE

Many of us will remember the fun Canadian band from the 1980's, LOVERBOY, whose most famous hit was "WORKING FOR THE WEEKEND". In fact, I happened to be at the Illinois State Fair last summer when they played on '80's Night, and these dudes sounded just like they did 30 years ago!

The message of "everybody's working for the weekend" is universal. In fact, Jimmy Buffett once told us, it was 5 o'clock somewhere! Not to be outdone, perennial booze-soaked country crooner George Jones reminded us what he was going to do once it was "Finally Friday"!

You and I both work with, know people who, and maybe are ourselves - people who keep saying "I wish it was Friday"...and this is on Monday morning! Is this really a good thing? There's nothing wrong with anticipating that feeling of glorious freedom of walking out of the office, factory, shop, hair salon or retail store on a Friday night after a good long week of hard work! In fact, there is something rewarding about that.

But friends, the joy of that precise satisfaction is the acquired by daily living. The joy is in the journey to get there - the trials;  the trip-ups;  the telemarketing calls at dinner; the terrible boss (real or imagined); the tons of paper work or overtime at the shop where a wave of clients just hit you like a tone of bricks....that's living, baby!

Jesus said, in so many words, that you have not, because you ask not. A verse which stood out to me yesterday is one we know well, from Matthew 7:7 NLT "Keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you".

Instead of wishing your life away and hoping it was Friday, before you even get to work on Monday, why not ask the Lord for the Ability, Attitude and Appreciation it takes to make it through that morning. As the morning goes, so goes the rest of the day!

The verse Jesus gave us is all present tense. So let's briefly break it down:
KEEP ON ASKING - The literal meaning is, "why not make a petition to Me"?! People will sign almost any petition for the cause they believe in! Well then - sign this one! Ask the Lord!
YOU WILL RECEIVE - He says, literally, "I offered"....and "it will be bestowed upon you"! If you walk with Him, He walks with you....and as James says "all good things come from the Father of Lights!
KEEP ON SEEKING - Literally, Jesus says "why don't you look into it, hoss?" Come on, man....we have the Greatest Gift of all - the Love of Jesus, and we don't look into having Him clear the way for us (by praying every morning)!
YOU WILL FIND - Again, He promises us a "Eureka" moment that if we pursue Him - VOILA - there He is AND you will not be disappointed at what you discover, not just for your personal benefit, but MAINLY ABOUT HIM!
KEEP ON KNOCKING - You will definitely like this one. The Lord is LITERALLY saying come on "beat down this door and ask Me, big time (with respect of course) to open it! The meaning is not just a tap on the door knocker, but doing all you can to say "LET ME IN"...into this blessing You have for me!
THE DOOR WILL BE OPENED - The original word "anoigo" follows the part about you beating down the door for Jesus to answer...because the reward for actively pursuing Him in ASKING, SEEKING AND KNOCKING IS THIS - HE BREAKS DOWN THE DOOR FOR YOU TO COME IN!  This is what the original word means!

Now, when 5 o'clock somewhere comes and the whistle blows, Katie bar the door...and we're off to hopefully, the best weekend in modern history. While it may be well-deserved, the moment by moment joy of living the Blessed Life, is doing exactly what Matthew 7:7 gives us - EACH AND EVERY DAY OF THE WEEK ...from Monday morning traffic to Friday afternoon starting pistols, out of the parking lot at quitting time!
